TheBusinessDesk.com triumphs at Midlands Media Awards

DEPUTY editor of TheBusinessDesk.com Duncan Tift was last night crowned the top business journalist in the Midlands at an annual media awards ceremony.

Judges at the 10th Midlands Media Awards, run by the Birmingham Press Club and sponsored by Birmingham Airport, praised Mr Tift for the depth and detail in his stories.

The news comes just a few weeks after TheBusinessDesk.com/WestMidlands celebrated the first anniversary of its launch with a party at Harvey Nichols in Birmingham.

Editor Marc Reeves said: “There’s nothing about manufacturing and other sectors of business and industry in the West Midlands that Duncan doesn’t know about.

“He is one of the most experienced journalists in the region and has made the move from print to online seamlessly, using the new medium to ensure that business news is as fresh and up-to-date as it can be in the digital age.”

TheBusinessDesk.com was also shortlisted in the innovation and online journalist categories.

The ceremony was held at Warwickshire County Cricket Club, in Edgbaston, and welcomed photographers and print, online and broadcast journalists from across the West and East Midlands.

Scoop of the year went to Mary Griffin, from the Coventry Telegraph, who exposed the now infamous CCTV footage of Mary Bale putting a cat into a wheelie bin.

Derbyshire Magazine won magazine of the year while its sister newspaper the Derby Telegraph was crowned the region’s top paper.

Ben Lowe, from Staffordshire University, took home the student of the year prize.
