Hummingbird encouraged in hunt for gold

NEWLY floated Birmingham based minerals exploration firm Hummingbird Resources has said it has made good progress in its search for gold deposits.

The company, which floated in December, said it was “extremely encouraged” by the results of its drilling programme in the Dugbe F project of Eastern Liberia.

It said a series of 20 bore holes had shown concentrations of arsenic which suggested a continuous succession of mineral deposits. The company is now awaiting results to confirm the content of the find.

Hummingbird has been exploring for minerals in Liberia since November 2005 and is currently the holder of the largest area of mineral exploration ground in the geological region of Eastern Liberia, with licences prospective for iron ore, other minerals and gold – which is its focus at present.

In a statement, Daniel Betts, chief executive of Hummingbird Resources, said: “We are extremely encouraged by the initial results of our 2011 drill programme at our Dugbe F project which would seem to substantiate our belief in the continuation of the mineralised zone.

“Arsenic has in the past been shown to have a direct correlation with gold mineralisation at Dugbe F.  We will continue drilling into the newly discovered extension of the gold in soil anomaly into the Joe Village licence area in order to add ounces to our existing resource.”

He said the company was also encouraged by results from its other operations, which are focused along the length of the Dugbe Shear Zone.

Mr Betts said these added weight to the company’s belief that its Dugbe F deposit was a small part of a much larger mineral deposit.

The company was co-founded by Mr Betts, son of Stephen Betts, chairman of Betts Metals and who is also a non-executive director of Hummingbird, a Midlands family that has been smelting, refining and dealing in precious metals in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter for 250 years and seven generations.
