Amillan wires up new Edgbaston Stadium

SOLIHULL-based communications specialist Amillan has been appointed to install the communications infrastructure at the new Edgbaston Stadium for Warwickshire County Cricket Club.

The Amillan installation will deliver more than 1,000 access points for club officials and the world’s media based at the new stadium for international fixtures. The project will be delivered in conjunction with Hulse Electrical Mechanical Engineering Services.

In the advanced stages of construction with Galliford Try and due for completion by July 2011, Edgbaston stadium’s building work is part of a venue-wide refurbishment programme based on a design by Broadway Malyan.  Accessed via a new main entrance, the venue will seat 8250 spectators and include media and press rooms, a members’ area, catering services and a museum.

The technical solution developed by Amillan with Hulse Electrical is a complex system that will support a number of advanced services for WCCC over a blend of fibre-optics and copper.  It will deliver over 1,000 access points throughout the entire venue including interior and exterior areas.  The design specification has overcome the challenges of integrating the existing building with the new scheme in a single seamless network.

Phil Beale, construction account director at Amillan, said: “Amillan is very proud to have been selected to fulfil the contract at Edgbaston stadium, a prestigious project in our home city. We are well-experienced when it comes to understanding and supporting the demands of operating a world-class sporting venue, thanks to our long-standing management of the infrastructure at Wimbledon’s tennis complex.

“We recognise the complete dependence upon an efficient and reliable IT infrastructure and as such, we are able to apply our project experience to develop a robust and cost effective solution for Edgbaston.”

Phil Macdonald, Warwickshire County Cricket Club project director, said: “A high performance ICT infrastructure is an essential component in the operation of any world-class stadium and central to the successful delivery of events. In addition to internal systems, in today’s media age, we need to provide the world’s press with easy access to internet and network communications systems wherever and whenever required.

“The infrastructure being installed by Amillan enables us to meet these demands and means that we can compete on level terms with other venues around the world. “

In January, Amillan was announced as the main contractor to supply ICT infrastructure work at the new site for Bournville College at Longbridge. http://www.thebusinessdesk.com/westmidlands/news/116883-amillan-selected-for-bournville-college-project.html
