Friday Funnies: Legal assault – socking it to them for charity
THIS week purveyor of all the finest gossip John Duckers casts his eye over a recent white collar boxing event in Birmingham.
Ever fancied punching a lawyer? Ever so tempting, isn’t it?
Well, a few lucky souls got the chance in the No5 Chambers White Collar Boxing event for the Ralph Lewis QC Memorial Cup.
Lewis, a former head of No5 Chambers, died a year ago from cancer.
The event was put on in association with Fighting Fit City Gym and held at the Burlington Hotel.
Frankly, white collar boxing all sounds rather painful, but is apparently the latest fad.
The blurb reads: “White collar boxing is increasing in popularity with large numbers of investment bankers, accountants, solicitors and other professionals looking for an exciting way to get fit and learn a new skill.”
So, bout one, for example, was Michael Duck QC of No 5 Chambers v John Maher, a director of insurance firm Commitments Protection.
Maher won; presumably his opponent failed to duck.
Boom! Boom!
Others taking part were Michael Wingrave, Earl Pinnock, Brett Moloney, Matthew Brunning, Jinda Boora, Richard Cooke and Tim Pole, all of No5 Chambers.
Also Joseph Kotrie-Monson of Mary Monson Solicitors, Lee Dawe, a director of BDG Manufacturing, Gavin Tansley, of Shakespeares, Aaron Bell, of West Midlands Police, Andrew Evans of Gateley, Richard Cusworth of Mott MacDonald and Andy Jones.
The winners were Wingrave, Pinnock, Tansley, Brunning, Brora, Cooke and Cusworth.
Hard folk these No5 guys.
Sadly the much vaunted fight between barrister Victoria Clifford and Kim Andrews, of Irwin Mitchell, was cancelled after the latter, my spies reveal, was deemed not to be match fit.
A black tie evening, meal, raffle and charity auction were all compered by TV personality Gary Newbon and sponsored by Wesleyan For Lawyers, in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Come on Duck, you useless lump, get that jab working!
