Tofu King gobbles up new premises in £0.9m deal

The former Systemair headquarters in Aston

A Birmingham food company is relocating within the city after securing a £0.9m deal on new premises.

Tofu King, currently based in Small Heath, is moving to the former base of ventilation and air conditioning group, Systemair, in Cheston Road, Aston after concluding a freehold deal with Savills for £920,000.

Tofu King produces a variety of bean curd products for the oriental food market. It supplies oriental supermarkets, specialist retailers and restaurants across the UK.

Products include ready-to-eat fried tofu marinated in chilli and sesame oil, as well as dried products and block products for cooking that come in different pack sizes.

The firm, which has been trading for 12 years, realised that automating the packaging process would increase productivity.

However, restricted capacity at the firm’s existing premises was limiting efficiency and so the company opted to relocate to larger premises, but staying within Birmingham.

The 20,226 sq ft former Systemair offices provided the ideal solution.

The company is expected to take possession of the new premises within the next few weeks and intends to use the site for the manufacture of its products.

The property’s location half a mile from the A38 Aston Expressway and close to Junction 6 of the M6 will also improve the firm’s distribution capabilities.

Justin McVeigh, of the industrial team at Savills Birmingham, said: “The property was in solicitors’ hands within four weeks of coming to market, leading to a good result for Systemair. We wish both businesses every success for the future.”

The purchaser was unrepresented.

Systemair has relocated to a 4,000 sqm office and warehouse facility at the Gravelly Industrial Park, Birmingham. The site is the group’s UK headquarters, while it also operates a national network of 13 regional offices.
