Greyhound charity wins LoveBrum funding

Birmingham Greyhound Protection

LoveBrum has awarded £2,000 to a local charity that rescue and rehome greyhounds.

Birmingham Greyhound Protection was set up by its founder, Kerry Elliman, after years of rehoming greyhounds and seeing that there was a big gap and a need to help greyhounds that were not lucky enough to be put into the mainstream greyhound rescues.

Each month, LoveBrum selects three good causes around one theme and asks its members to vote for one of the organisations. March’s theme was causes supporting animals.

The greyhound industry produces thousands of dogs a year, but there are only so many mainstream rescues with limited places available. Birmingham Greyhound Protection pick up as many of the greyhounds that fall through the mainstream rescues as possible. These dogs are often in very poor condition both physically and mentally when they arrive at the protection.

Birmingham Greyhound Protection receives no funding, and relies solely on donations and its supporters to keep the Protection open. All the greyhounds that they rescue are given medical treatment, and very often will need dental work, spaying, neutering and blood work doing.

The other finalists for the funding included The Animal Healing Trust and The Animal House Rescue.

The Animal Healing Trust is a Sanctuary for Horses founded by Sue Gessey. She works with them in a variety of ways, including using Reiki, and other Holistic approaches to focus on all aspects of their wellbeing.

The Animal House Rescue is a small Birmingham based rescue, which takes in unwanted, abused and abandoned animals. They use foster homes, which enable them to see the animals behaviour in a home environment, then any problems can be dealt with and they can re- home them to the most appropriate place.
