Elderly dance group wins LoveBrum funding

The Over 55’s Community Dance Class

The Over 55’s Community Dance Class was the recipient of LoveBrum’s £2,000 award for December after being chosen by the charity’s members in its monthly vote.

Each month the Birmingham charity selects three community organisations working in a related area that are looking for support and asks its members to decide who should receive the grant.

In December the Over 55’s Community Dance Class, a group of older adults between the ages of 60-80 from the deprived areas of Newton and Aston, was the popular choice.

It was founded by community dance instructor Victoria Dre and was originally part of Birmingham Settlement’s Aging Well project as an eight-week pilot. The LoveBrum money will fund 30 weeks of dance lessons along with venue hire.

The other shortlisted organisations were Karis BeFriends, which supports the elderly community across Harborne, Ladywood and Edgbaston, and Memory Lane, a community project based in Balsall Heath which helps to combat loneliness and isolation.
