Coventry based MTC wins US standards approval

National Centre for Additive Manufacturing

The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC), which is based in Coventry has won the approval of ASTM, the US standards organisation, which makes MTC the first, non-US founding partner of the Centre for Excellence in Manufacturing.

MTC, which was started in 2012, is a leading organisation in the business of additive manufacturing (3D printing)  and it has 100 industrial members who work to inspire and advocate great British manufacturing all over the world by designing new technologies and improved manufacturing processes, in collaboration with industry, universities and other institutions.

Alongside Auburn University in Alabama, NASA and EWI, both MTC and ASTM work to advance standards in the additive manufacturing industry, and MTC hosts the European Space Agencies additive manufacturing benchmarking centre.

Working with businesses of all sizes – from start-ups to established global corporations -MTC promotes an emphasis on developing expertise in the aerospace, marine, defence, construction, and food & drink sectors.

MTC’s technical director, Professor Ken Young said that he was ” excited to join this vitally important effort to build a strong technical foundation for the future of additive manufacturing”.

Commenting on the choice of MTC as their first non-US partner, Dr Mohsen Seifi said “The MTC’s proposal was one of the highest ranked among dozens of proposals submitted. Clearly the MTC will play a key role in achieving the vision of filling industry gaps in standardisation and driving innovation on a global scale”.
