Theatre’s extension plans get green light

A planning application submitted by Wolverhampton Grand Theatre to the city council to expand its premises has been approved.

The application sought permission for a pop-up theatre next door on the site of the former Post Office building on Lichfield Street.

CEO and artistic director Adrian Jackson said: “I am absolutely delighted to be moving onto the next stage in this exciting project which supports and enhances the regeneration of Wolverhampton city centre. The potential of this second space will contribute to the Lichfield Street Arts Hub vision. The opportunity to build upon our already thriving community, educational and cultural offering is thrilling.

“We are now in consultation with the owners of the site and will implement a full fundraising strategy. ”

Cllr John Reynolds, cabinet member for city economy, added: “This is a bold move by Wolverhampton Grand Theatre to bring a major uplift to the city centre’s entertainment offer.

“We are re-imagining and re-inventing our city centre and an outstanding arts and culture offer enticing new audiences and visitors is a fundamental part of that.”
