Business leaders recognised in Queen’s Birthday Honours

Business leaders from across the region have been recognised for their achievements in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

In total 1,073 people received an award, including a CBE for author Lee Child, the former King Edwards School student who has enjoyed global success with the Jack Reacher series.

One-in-eight of the 2019 recipients were recognised for their services to industry and the economy.

Dr Louise Brooke-Smith, who has led Arcadis’ UK and Ireland planning and development offer since 2017, has been awarded an OBE for services to the built environment and diversity and inclusion. Brooke-Smith was the first female Global President of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in 2014

She said: “Receiving the OBE is a fantastic honour and I’m privileged to be in a position where I can continue to make a valuable contribution to our sector.”

Jane Shepherd, Shepherd PR

Shepherd PR managing director Jane Shepherd received an MBE for services to international trade and the community in Staffordshire.

In 2017 she was appointed by the Department for International Trade (DIT) as an Export Champion and last year to the Trade and Investment Group of the Midlands Engine.

Shepherd said it had “been a privilege” to be part of DIT’s Exporting is Great campaign

Ian Callum. Jaguar Land Rover

Jaguar’s chief designer Ian Callum received a CBE for services to the British car industry. Callum, who is leaving Jaguar Land Rover after more than 20 years, led the team which designed the XF, F-TYPE and I-PACE.

In his previous role at TWR he was responsible for the Aston Martin DB7, Vanquish and DB9.

Prof Dr Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover chief executive, said: “The contribution Ian Callum has made to Jaguar’s industry-leading design reputation cannot be over-stated.”

Dr Pam Waddell

Dr Pam Waddell, the founding director of the Innovation Alliance for the West Midlands, was awarded an OBE for services to innovation in the West Midlands.

The regional partnership works to stimulate science and technology-based innovation to improve prosperity and quality of life across the region.

She said: “Receiving an OBE is both a great personal honour and an endorsement for the ongoing work of the Innovation Alliance for the West Midlands, and all those who have made it so successful at connecting innovators around the West Midlands.

“I hope the recognition this award brings helps us to go from strength to strength.”

Prof Liz Barnes, vice chancellor of Staffordshire University

Senior figures from the region’s universities have also been recognised.

There were CBEs awarded to Prof Liz Barnes, vice-chancellor and chief executive of Staffordshire University, and to Coventry University’s vice-chancellor Prof John Latham. Prof Duncan Lawson, a professor of mathematics education at Newman University, received an MBE.

West Midlands residents with business interests outside of the region were also recognised.

Rachel Clacher, in Oswestry, Shropshire, was awarded a CBE for services to business and disadvantaged young people. The co-founder of answering service Moneypenny, she later set up a charity, WeMindTheGap.

Hinkley Point C managing director Stuart Crooks received a CBE for services to nuclear energy. Lancaster University’s vice-chancellor Prof Mark E Smith got a CBE for services to research and higher education.
