Wolverhampton emerges as frontrunner for Government department relocation

Councillor Ian Brookfield and Secretary of State greets Robert Jenrick MP in Wolverhampton last July

Wolverhampton may have won the race to be the new home of the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government, according to reports over the weekend.

Minister Robert Jenrick is thought to have earmarked Wolverhampton as a possible base for the Ministry as part of the Government’s efforts to move departments away from the capital.

The Housing Secretary was quoted as saying those looking for an appointment would be “just as likely” to see him in Wolverhampton as Whitehall.

Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands, said the new was “very encouraging”.

In a tweet, he said: “I’ve been lobbying Robert Jenrick to make the case for the West Mids as part of MHCLG’s relocation – and it appears we may well have won the argument. Wolverhampton would be an excellent home and yet another sign of confidence in our region.”

Jenrick was born in Wolverhampton and attended school there. The city was one of the first places he visted after he landed his current job last July.
