People: The latest West Midlands hires

Shakespeare Martineau has announced its latest hires in the firm’s energy and employment teams.

Sushma Maharaj joins Shakespeare Martineau as partner, with more than 20 years’ experience in the energy sector, while Matt McDonald joins with more than 11 years’ employment law expertise.

Having previously worked at boutique clean energy firm Lux Nova Partners and global firms – including Dentons, DLA and Squire Patton Boggs – Maharaj has extensive experience of advising on renewable energy projects including corporate power purchase agreements, and on heat networks.

Based in Birmingham, McDonald joins the firm as partner, following an extended career at Pinsent Masons, covering all aspects of employment law with a particular specialism in high court employment litigation.

He has worked with clients across a range of sectors including manufacturing, infrastructure and construction.

R&D and innovation tax relief specialist Caroline Walton has joined Claritas Tax as a senior manager.

The role will also see her working closely with Claritas Tax’s Birmingham team to strengthen its R&D proposition across the Midlands, North West and the UK.

Andy Woodall

Nine promotions have been made at Cushman & Wakefield’s Birmingham office based at No.1 Colmore Square.

Andy Roberts, Andy Woodall and Tayir Mahmood, all part of the Global Occupier Services (GOS) team, have been promoted to partner.

Also part of the GOS team, Sophie Ellis has been promoted to associate, while James Compton is now senior surveyor-level and Claire Nevin, Mark Williams and Daniel Hyams are now surveyor-level.

In addition, Claire McCormick in the business rates team is now an associate.
