Plans revealed for 31-storey tower which could create 340 jobs

How the scheme could look

Plans to turn the site of a former pub into a major 723-bed student scheme in the Edgbaston area of Birmingham have been submitted to the City Council.

The development, by a company called Fusion Birmingham Devco, would include a 31-storey tower and blocks of up to 11 storeys across a 211,000 sq ft site on ground once occupied The Trees pub in Bristol Road.

It is thought the scheme could create 340 jobs.

The history of the proposal dates back to September 2017. A previous design included build to rent accommodation, but these plans have now been dropped.

A planning statement prepared by agent Lichfields reads: “The development of the site with a tall building would complement the surrounding development and provides a legible termination of the south-facing vistas down Bristol Road from the city centre toward the Ring Road junction. Its proximity to Bristol Road to the east mirrors the location and massing of Belgrave View, whilst its set back location from the Ring Road to the north is in keeping with the massing hierarchy of built form along this important vista.”

The developer is hoping to start on site next October with a completion date of August 2024.
