130 jobs at risk as Tesco closes value chain

Tesco is to close the doors on its shortlived value brand Jack’s putting 130 jobs at risk.

It will shut seven Jack’s stores and convert six others into Tesco supermarkets. Some roles at Tesco’s head office will also be affected.

Jack’s was launched in 2018 to compete directly with discount retailers Aldi and Lidl and to reflect a change in customers’ attitudes that had seen them embrace the value retailers.

Tesco UK and Republic of Ireland chief executive Jason Tarry said: “Our Jack’s brand will continue to be sold across Booker and our symbol brands, bringing great value and quality to even more customers.

“Our priority is to find roles within our wider business for all the colleagues who want to stay with us.”

The Jack’s store in Castle Bromwich will close, while its site in Rubery will become a Tesco supermarket.

Tesco has also announced plans to close more than half of its meat, fish and deli counters, with 317 stores affected.
