Ground broken on 438 home ‘Belgrave Village’ project

Work has begun on an urban village of 438 homes at Belgrave Village in Balsall Heath.

Galliard Homes and Apsley House Capital entered into a joint partnership with Midlands property developer Wavensmere Homes for the project on the 12-acre site which was previously home to Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College and Birmingham Sports Centre.

£300m of new developments will be built in Birmingham and Ipswich by the JV with Belgrave Village being one of them.

The ground, which has been vacant for more than 20 years, will now be home to 264 one and two-bedroom apartments and 174 two, three and four-bedroom townhouses.

Courtyard gardens will be at the centre of the development alongside a gym, landscaped public realm, a linear park, retail and co-working space and 263 parking spaces.

James Dickens, managing director of Wavensmere Homes, said: “The ground-breaking represents a significant milestone in the construction of Belgrave Village which will provide high-quality homes with a range of amenities and green spaces for residents to enjoy.

“Buyers have bought into our vision for the development, with phase one already sold out such is the level of demand.”

Stephen Conway, executive chairman of Galliard Homes, said: “Belgrave Village is our fourth joint venture development in Birmingham.

“Together with our partners, we’re building 2,288 homes across the city. We understand the challenges faced by Birmingham City Council to deliver the new homes needed for the city and together with our joint venture partners we’re proud to be playing our part in helping the council achieve its goals.”

Cllr Ian Ward, leader of Birmingham City Council, joined members of the joint venture partnership at the site for a ground-breaking ceremony to mark the milestone.

He said: “Birmingham needs more homes to cater for the city’s growing population and it’s great to see developers such as Wavensmere Homes and The Galliard Apsley Partnership answering the call.

“Belgrave Village isn’t just another housing development; it’s a new neighbourhood that will regenerate and breathe life into this up-and coming area of the city, delivering much needed homes for the people of Birmingham.”

The development received planning approval in October 2021 and is located between Birmingham city centre and Moseley. It fronts the A4540 Belgrave Middleway and the A435 Haden Way.
