Construction group swoops for Rugby League club

A Huddersfield-based group of construction and contractor companies, Big Red, has officially taken over Rugby League club, Midlands Hurricanes.

The Big Red Industries Group is a diverse company with interests predominantly in the Built Environment.

The Betfred League One club had previously been jointly owned by Mike Lomas and Alan Robinson.

An agreement was made where the Big Red Industries Group, of which Lomas is CEO and owner, would purchase the club.

Lomas has continued his role of club chairman and he has appointed Greg Wood as CEO of the Hurricanes who brings a wealth of knowledge from a career in professional sport.

Lomas and Wood say they have exciting plans in the pipeline on how they wish to develop the sport in the Midlands area and increase the uptake for Rugby League in the surrounding areas.

They are both looking to drive community engagement for rugby through targeting schools. By doing so, they hope to encourage school children to gain interest in the sport and ultimately promote the sport to parents.

The Big Red Industries Group has sponsored the Super Leagues Huddersfield Giants for the last five seasons.

Over the last year Lomas and Wood have worked hard behind the scenes at the Midlands Hurricanes to build strong foundations for the development of the club.

Additionally, they are looking to build relationships with local hospitals and businesses, offering discounted game day and season tickets.

The pair are also finalising a limited number of sponsorship opportunities, with the recent launch of the new Ellgren official 2023 home and away kits.

The club is currently in the process of moving to a new stadium, and intends to reveal more details about this in the coming weeks.
