163 jobs to go as manufacturer confirms factory closure

3M has officially announced the closure of its Atherstone factory, resulting in the loss of 163 jobs.
Since 1964, the factory, situated on the border of Leicestershire, has been the sole location where 3M manufacturers coated abrasives.
The Ratcliffe Road site also served as the main European hub for the industrial and transportation development laboratory and technical service group.
Two months ago, discussions were initiated by the company regarding potential job cuts. The latest update confirms that all 163 employees will be subject to job redundancies, as the factory prepares to cease operations by the conclusion of 2024.
The manufacturing processes previously conducted at the Atherstone factory will now be relocated to 3M’s other global facilities over the next 12 to 15 months.
Lars Hanseid, managing director of 3M North Europe Region said: “I would like to express my sincere appreciation of our employees’ commitment and professionalism, not only through the consultation process but also as we now go through this period of transition.
“The company regrets the loss of any jobs, but we believe this move is the only way forward for the future of the business.”
