Hotel evacuated after cafe fire in Birmingham city centre

West Midlands Fire Service responded to a fire in a ground-floor cafe in Martineau Place, close to Corporation Street this morning (Friday) at 6:15am.
Four fire engines and 19 firefighters from Highgate, Ladywood and Aston stations attended with both Martineau Place and Corporation Street closed whilst the fire was extinguished.
The fire, caused by a refrigeration unit in the cafe’s shop front, resulted in a full evacuation of a nearby hotel and an NHS medical facility took place as a precaution. Everyone was accounted for. One member of staff at the medical facility was checked for very mild smoke inhalation by paramedics.
Both Martineau Place and Corporation Street roads have now re-opened.
An investigation into the cause of the fire found it began due to an electrical fault.
