Law firm Shakespeare Martineau has welcomed legal director Helen Dyke to its Birmingham employment team.

Having previously acted as the client relationship lead for the Association of Colleges – which included the management of its employment legal helpline – she specialises in the education sector, predominately working with further education colleges, in respect of a wide-range of employment law issues. Dyke also works with a wide range of employers from commercial sectors.

Dyke delivers practical and strategic advice on complex matters, including redundancy and restructuring, disciplinary and grievance issues, absence and performance management, contractual changes, discrimination, TUPE, restrictive covenants and Trade Union disputes. She also regularly provides bespoke training to clients and presents at conferences.

Bringing with her more than 15 years’ experience advising employers, Dyke – who will be based at Shakespeare Martineau’s Birmingham hub but working with clients nationally – has joined the firm after almost 12 years at Irwin Mitchell.

She said: “I am absolutely delighted to have joined Shakespeare Martineau’s employment team. The team has a fantastic reputation, which can be seen by its recent band 1 ranking in Chambers & Partners 2024 guide. I am looking forward to working alongside the education and employment partners to deliver sound advice and legal expertise to the education sector, in addition to the firm’s commercial employment team.”

Harris Lamb has grown its building consultancy department with the appointment of a graduate surveyor.

Lachlan Macphail has joined the business having achieved a first-class degree in Building Surveying from Liverpool John Moores University.

He is now enrolled in the rigorous APC (Assessment of Professional Competence) programme to achieve accreditation from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors with the support of Harris Lamb’s in-house mentor.

Lachlan said: “During the course of my degree I undertook work placements with various property consultancies to help me develop the skills required of a surveyor, such as drawing up floor plans, using architectural based software and working off-site shadowing building surveyors to understand the role and its dynamic.

“Having completed my work placements within the West Midlands I was familiar with Harris Lamb’s reputation, breadth of experience, and the business’ diverse range of commercial instructions throughout the UK, and was keen to be a part of the team when the position became available.

“I was particularly attracted to the support the business provides in terms of providing both in-house mentoring and practical experience to help graduates work toward their APC, a process I have enrolled for and that I am committed to achieving as part of my own career progression within the sector.”
