Athletics club locks in future at Alexander Stadium

Birmingham City Council and Birchfield Harriers Athletic Club have signed a new license agreement for Alexander Stadium.

After a £72m redevelopment, the new deal secures Birchfield Harriers’ ongoing place at the stadium, updating the agreement from the original license in 1975.

Birchfield Harriers, a UK athletics club, has a long history of Olympic representation, having participated in every Summer Olympics since 1908, except for one. The club offers training and competition opportunities for athletes starting from the age of 9.

The £72m redevelopment plans included increasing permanent seating capacity at the venue from 12,700 to 18,000 allowing more than 30,000 during the Games through additional temporary seating.

Cllr Saima Suleman, cabinet member for digital, culture, heritage and tourism said: “The investment that continues to be put into the stadium will provide a lasting Commonwealth Games legacy. The city council is committed to working in partnership with the club to promote athletics and grow the sport further in a stadium with the best facilities and support for the whole community to enjoy.”
