Work begins on £700m University of Warwick project
Midlands-based O’Brien Contractors has started groundwork at the University of Warwick as part of its £700m Connect Programme, which marks the largest investment in campus facilities in the university’s 60-year history.
The project includes a new science and engineering precinct under the STEM Connect initiative.
Partnering with Mace Group, the first phase of the 43-week project is set for completion in summer 2025.
The precinct will feature STEM learning and research spaces, collaborative areas and social facilities, with specialised facilities for Chemistry, Physics and Engineering.
Under a JCT Design & Build contract, O’Brien Contractors will lead essential infrastructure work, including building platforms, retaining walls and new car parks.
Improvements to campus access will include a new road junction, utility diversions, a pumping station and drainage infrastructure, with completion expected by July.
Lance Gudger, director at O’Brien Contractors, said: “This is a hugely significant project for The University of Warwick, the Midlands as a whole, and the UK’s STEM sector. We’re extremely pleased to be involved.
“We’re a close neighbour to Warwick and the project allows us to make an impact on the local community too, from the jobs and social value we’re creating, to the legacy we are leaving at the university. We look forward to working closely with all the partners involved to help this flagship new facility come to life.”
