£23m refurbishment underway to build specialist school in Coventry

Clegg Construction has begun work on a £23m refurbishment scheme to deliver a specialist education school for Coventry City Council.

The development of a new facility at the former Woodlands School will provide specially designed and additional space for pupils at Woodfield School and bring together primary and secondary-aged pupils.

As part of the project, Clegg will be creating outdoor play facilities, such as play areas and an outdoor forest school to improve the specialist teaching spaces to support the needs of the pupils.

The company will also be carrying out the internal refurbishment of the seven original buildings and the provision of a new car park.

Cllr Dr Kindy Sandhu, cabinet member for education and skills at Coventry City Council said: “Every child in the city deserves to have the best education they possibly can, and this new facility is going to offer that. The new design will provide the best possible learning experiences moving forward.

“It’s exciting that Clegg will soon be making a start on the construction work at the site. It’s going to be a huge asset for the pupils once it’s all finished and I’m looking forward to seeing the development work progress.”

Michael Sims, managing director at Clegg Construction said: “Clegg Construction has wide experience of delivering new and refurbished educational facilities and we are extremely proud to have been appointed to redevelop, reconfigure, and repurpose this site. The team at Clegg Construction is looking forward to work progressing on this project, alongside our delivery partners.”

Other members of the project team include Glancy Nicholls Architects, civil and structural engineer BSP Consulting, the client’s retained engineer Rambol and mechanical and electrical engineering consultants Couch Perry Wilkes and Gillespies for landscaping.

The new school is due to be completed in 2026.
