JLR drives into the future with new tech at Solihull plant

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is taking a step towards modernising its manufacturing with the introduction of Ericsson Private 5G at its Solihull plant

The new technology will help improve the production of Range Rover vehicles by supporting key systems like IoT sensors, vision technology and production tools.

By replacing outdated wired networks with Ericsson’s fast, secure 5G, JLR can now support IoT devices, AI, and automation and is even looking into using automated guided vehicles (AGVs).

The change allows for real-time data transmission, improving efficiency and reducing downtime.

With the help of Fujitsu and Ericsson, JLR is now able to run more connected and streamlined operations.

The improved connectivity also allows teams to make faster decisions, optimise processes, and quickly fix or replace broken equipment.

Stephen Mason, product manager at JLR said: “As a leading global luxury automotive manufacturer, we must equip our teams with the tools and connectivity necessary to optimise efficiency. Ericsson Private 5G provides a robust foundation for a connected, agile, and data-driven manufacturing environment. This positions us to enhance automation, digitalisation, safety, and sustainability across our operations.”

Manish Tiwari, head of enterprise 5G at Ericsson said: “Private 5G is transforming manufacturing by supporting the complex connectivity needs of Industry 4.0. We are thrilled to partner with a luxury automotive leader like JLR, providing a network solution that elevates their global manufacturing capabilities.”
