New interest in Coventry Airport

A MIDLANDS-based company is believed to be looking at buying and operating Coventry Airport after Swiss interest in the facility evaporated.

Switzerland-based ADP had been looking into the possibility of taking on the Baginton site, raising hopes that the airport may become operational again following its closure last year.

Despite pouring over the books and saying that the site had great potential, ADP has decided to withdraw its interest. The reason for its decision has not been disclosed.

However, hopes that planes could once again be using the facility have been boosted following reports yesterday which said a new potential buyer had emerged.

Coventry City Council said a local partner remained committed to the project and the local authority would be working with the company to try and bring the matter to a successful conclusion.

Despite the difficulties faced by the airline industry, the airport is thought to be viable provided it can attract interest from low cost carriers, holiday charter companies or freight operators.

Passenger flights were halted in 2008 when Thomson withdrew two services. The airport continued to operate freight services but these ended late last year after which the airport was closed.
