E.ON axes 500 jobs in the Midlands

ENERGY supplier E.ON has announced it is cutting 500 jobs at its head office in Coventry and at its support offices near Nottingham.

The company said it was looking for voluntary redundancies to reduce its payroll to reflect the changed nature of the business following the sale of its distribution arm, Central Networks, in a £4bn deal in March.

The German-owned firm, which sponsors the FA Cup, said it was now looking to concentrate on its customer-facing business.

Paul Golby, chief executive of E.ON UK, said: “We had to undertake a deep and rigorous review of how much money we spend in order to ensure we keep costs as low as possible for our customers, become a more agile organisation and build a sustainable business in the UK.

“While I’m very aware that this will be a difficult time for our colleagues, it is our aim to keep uncertainty to a minimum and to achieve these redundancies by voluntary means.”

The statement said the main impact of the redundancies was likely to be at the company’s head office in Coventry, and to a lesser extent at support functions at its offices north of Nottingham.

It said that due to the voluntary nature of the planned redundancies, it was not possible to say how many people at each site would be affected by the changes.
