Martineau expands with new European office

BIRMINGHAM law firm Martineau has expanded its operations by opening a new office in Brussels.
The practice, based in Colmore Square and which also has an office in London, has tied up with German law firm Becker Büttner Held.
Both firms have specialist energy practices with a pan-European client base.
The Brussels office – based in the city centre and close to the EU institutions – will be staffed by a team of energy and competition law specialists from Martineau, led by the firm’s senior partner Andrew Whitehead, alongside partners Peter Manford and James Dilley.
The team will work alongside their German colleagues from BBH on key issues affecting clients operating across the European energy markets.
The BBH team in Brussels is led by energy lawyer Dr Dörte Fouquet.
Mr Whitehead said: “The pace of change (in the European energy market) is increasing, and we need to be at the centre of things to engage with the policy makers and help our clients understand what changes are planned.
“The ability to work with Dr Fouquet and her colleagues to offer a truly pan-European perspective is also going to be a key benefit of opening a Brussels office.”
In a separate development, planning permission has recently been granted for a new 2.5m sq ft international trade centre in Birkenhead.
The project will see Peel Group partnering up with Chinese minerals business Sam Wa which is a client of Martineau and law firm Loyntons.
