Auction house to host fundraising Staffordshire Hoard talk

A MIDLAND auction house promises to unravel some of the mysteries of the Staffordshire Hoard at an event to raise funds towards the conservation of the archaeological find.
Steve Dean, principal archaeologist at Staffordshire County Council who led the dig, will be speaking about the unique historic artefacts at Cuttlestones in Penkridge on Thursday, April 29.
Although the target of £3.3 million to buy the collection of Anglo Saxon items was met, an estimated £1.7 million still needs to be raised to fund the conservation, interpretation and display of the 1,500 artefacts, which were found on farmland near Burntwood, Lichfield, last year.
The talk will take place at the Cuttlestones’ sale room off Pinfold Lane, at 7.30pm for an 8pm start and a bar will be provided by Stone’s Old School Wines.
Head auctioneer and Cuttlestones’ MD, Ben Gamble, said: “Antique and rare items are the lifeblood of our business, so the campaign to keep such an important piece of history locally is a cause close to our hearts.
“We’re proud to host what promises to be a fascinating talk that will help shed some light on the mysteries surrounding the hoard.”
Tickets, which cost £3.50 in advance, are available from office@cuttlestones.co.uk or by telephoning 01785 714905. All proceeds will go to the Staffordshire Hoard fund.
