Automotive leader to receive honorary degree

A LEADER in the automotive and engineering sector and the founder of Classic FM are to receive honorary degrees from Coventry University.

Michael Baunton CBE graduated from the institute in 1973 with a mechanical engineering degree and went on to hold senior positions at Quinton Hazell Automotive, car parts firm Tenneco and renowned machinery company Caterpillar.

He received a CBE for services to the automotive and engineering sectors in 2004 and is currently chairman of the Industry Forum in Birmingham.

He receives an honorary doctor in business administration tomorrow.

Ralph Bernard CBE was presented this week with an honorary doctor in technology in recognition of his contribution to broadcasting.

Mr Bernard is considered one of commercial radio’s most senior figures and a driving force behind the transition to digital radio.

His career began in newspaper journalism and he later founded Classic FM, going on to lead multi-million pound mergers between regional broadcast networks.

The duo is among eight honorary graduands, to be recognised at ceremonies throughout this week at Coventry Cathedral, to have made significant contributions in their chosen fields.

Also being recognised is chartered engineer Otto Poon OBE, in recognition of his work in engineering and his support of environmental causes.
