Land Rover racks up strong sales

LAND Rover has continued its recent strong progress, chalking up 3,040 vehicle sales in May – a 64% increase on the same month last year.

Sales of the iconic vehicles are strong overall, up 60% in the year to date with more than 20,000 sold so far.

Sales have been improving consistently since the launch of the 2010 model year range – which boasts the latest, most efficient, and technologically advanced line-up for Land Rover in its history.

Range Rover, which commemorates its 40th birthday this month, is the strongest performer showing a 121% improvement in vehicle registrations.  

The Freelander 2 continues to be the best-seller with a 60% improvement compared with May 2009 and a 77% increase in the year to date.

The Discovery 4 is up 87%, Range Rover Sport up 58% and Defender up 32%.

The brand’s share of the UK off-road market in May is 26.9%, up 5.8%.

Globally, Land Rover sales were up 42.3% in May compared with the same month last year, with 15,181 vehicles sold.  Sales are up 36.5% in the year to date.  

Parent company, India’s Tata Motors said all the brand’s global markets had shown an increase compared with May last year.

Progress in China, where Tata recently announced it planned to start production of the vehicles, was very strong, with sales up 104%.

The top five global markets for May this year, compared with a year ago, are:
•    UK – 3,040 – up 64%
•    North America – 2,935 – up 24%
•    China – 2,026 – up 104%
•    Italy – 1,133 – up 25.9%
•    Middle East & North Africa – 812 – up 28.7%

The Land Rover Freelander 2 continued to be the best-selling model globally with sales up 23.3% in the year to date, with more than 23,000 vehicles sold.
