Free parking as city launches trial markets

FREE parking is being offered in a bid to boost trade in Wolverhampton as part of a series of one-day markets in the city centre.

Eight consecutive markets will run in Queen Square every Wednesday from July 28 and shoppers will get free parking for an hour.

Traders currently working on the existing School Street market will be given first option to take up a pitch on the new trial market.

Its introduction follows an ‘Incentive Package’ put together by Wolverhampton City Council to encourage new traders to set up in the city and help existing licensees during the tough economic climate.

The packages mean that existing traders can expand by taking an additional stall at a reduced rate or have a discount for block bookings.

The city council says that since the incentives were approved in May, 12 new businesses have opened up to trade on the indoor market with a further 16 currently going through the allocations process. In addition, four existing traders have also taken on additional stalls in this area.

Environment chief Cllr Barry Findlay said: “We are delighted to be launching our trial summer market.

“Along with the incentives package for existing and new traders, this provides an excellent boost – particularly in the current tough economic climate.

“We are also very pleased to be offering free parking. We hope this will encourage more people to come and shop.

“The council is committed to providing a high quality market in the city centre and we will do all we can to help traders and their customers.”

The existing market in School Street is open four days a week and will continue to operate as normal during the trail summer market which will be operated by LSD promotions.
