Birmingham University turns to ISE president to help with courses

THE School of Civil Engineering at the University of Birmingham has turned to the President of the Institution of Structural Engineers to help with the delivery of its courses.

The university hopes the appointment of John Nolan will improve its courses and help inspire structural engineers of the future.

The Visiting Professorship is sponsored by the Royal Academy of Engineering and will be held by Mr Nolan for the next three years.

The university said Mr Nolan offered a wealth of experience and he agreed to join the School of Civil Engineering after being approached by the university following a debate he participated in discussing what industry needs from academia.

Professor Mark Sterling, Head of The School of Civil Engineering, said: “John Nolan was selected for this role because he is passionate about educating structural engineers; he is a senior figure in the industry and comes with a wealth of experience.”

Commenting on his new position, Mr Nolan said: “It is vital that all university Structural and Civil Engineering students get exposure to the experience of practitioners, so that they can put the material they are learning into a career context and enhance their value to both prospective employers and society.

“I strongly support the Royal Academy of Engineering initiative in this area and am greatly honoured to be invited by the University of Birmingham to fulfil this role in such an eminent academic institution”

Mr Nolan is already a part of the school’s Industrial Advisory Board and brings a wealth of experience to the role, having worked as a labourer, contractor’s engineer, consulting engineer, business owner and property developer.
