Galliford Try named preferred bidder for £18m NIA refurbishment

HOUSEBUILDER and construction group Galliford Try has been named as the preferred bidder for the £18m project to refurbish Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena.

The announcement comes swiftly after the group secured another major project in the West Midlands, this one involving the development of a new £12m 101-apartment retirement village in Malvern.

The NIA project involves the creation of extra retail units, a new showcase entrance, and the creation of an extra 5,926 sqm of pre- and post-show space to combine with 7,500 sqm of space to be refurbished.

It is the firm’s second major project involving the NEC Group as it is also been named the preferred bidder for the £120m Genting casino and leisure complex at the NEC.

It is an active period for the group as it has also been appointed by Grainger to build a mixed-use project at Macaulay Road in central London. The £23m mix of 11 buildings will see a four-storey office development combined with 65 homes, of which 32 will be affordable.

Greg Fitzgerald, Galliford Try chief executive, said: “We are delighted to have won two such significant contracts in an extremely competitive market. These contract awards show that we can compete in all regions and provide our clients with high quality cost effective solutions for their needs.”

In Malvern, the company, the firm responsible for the new £32m stand at Edgbaston cricket ground, has been chosen by Festival Housing Association to construct the new retirement complex.

Galliford Try’s Partnerships business has also finalised a contract on the Gallions Quarter development in East London, following its selection as preferred developer in July 2011. The £23m contract will see the firm construct 170 homes in the second phase of the 700-home development.

It has also been granted mayoral approval for the £52m redevelopment of the old St Clement’s hospital site in Mile End, East London. The contract provides for a minimum of 223 homes.

Festival Housing Association has also chosen the group as preferred bidder for a £12m contract to build 165 homes for Northumberland County Council across two sites at Blyth and South Newsham.

“Galliford Try’s strong record in regeneration projects has been instrumental in securing us these significant contracts. We will continue to work with our partners in government and the housing industry to provide much-needed affordable housing wherever we can,” added Mr Fitzgerald.
