Presidential Election 2012: West Midlands to hold trade talks with US

ON the day that Barack Obama is celebrating winning the presidential election, two senior US trade officials will be in Birmingham to encourage trade links between the West Midlands and the US.

Flying in from the States will be Anne Evans, who is Connecticut-based district director of the US Department of Commercial International Trade Administration, and joining her will be John Breidenstine, minister counselor for commercial affairs, who is based at the US Embassy in London.

They will be attending a post-election breakfast at the city centre offices of law firm Squire Sanders, organised by the British American Business Council in the Midlands. Professor Scott Lucas, professor of American studies at Birmingham University will discuss the election outlook before an invited audience of Birmingham business people.

Afterwards Evans and Breidenstine will discuss trade opportunities with companies anxious to exploit business links with the US.

Evans is well-known in the West Midlands, having founded Elm Energy & Recycling (UK) Ltd in Wolverhampton in 1989. She left the firm, as its managing director, in 1994 to develop facilities in Europe.

In 2008 she was appointed to her current position  She leads a team of trade specialists and export finance professionals in assisting more than 2,500 Connecticut companies export and attract overseas customers to their businesses.
