Merry Christmas for The Works

SUTTON Coldfield-based retail chain The Works has recorded its highest ever Christmas sales.
The firm, which has more than 300 stores and also operates online, saw like-for-like sales for December up 6% on the same period in 2011.
Total sales for December 2012 were up 9% year-on-year, partly driven by strong performance across new stores and the week leading up to Christmas was The Works’ biggest-ever trading week.
The Works’ sales for December were £21m across its stores and e-commerce site. This is the retailer’s highest-ever monthly sales level.
Kevin Keaney, CEO of The Works, said: “Our strong Christmas sales performance crowns another positive December trading period for The Works. In this tough economic climate, when many retailers are pleased to simply maintain sales, we are proud to have achieved more than six per cent like-for-like growth for two consecutive Christmases.
“Our performance has been driven by strong operational and buying disciplines, along with prudent expansion of our store estate and the accelerated growth of our e-commerce business.
“Despite the tough economic climate, our growth shows that there is a place on the high street for our high quality, bargain price proposition as consumers continue to closely watch their spending and seek out good value.”
