Firms competing for lucrative Mailbox contract

FOUR construction firms are competing for the contract to revamp the Mailbox in Birmingham, it is understood.

According to the construction media, the firms battling it out are Brookfield Multiplex, Bowmer & Kirkland, Galliford Try and McLaren Construction. They are now waiting to find out who will get the nod to work on the £50m revamp of the retail and leisure complex which the complex’s owners hope will start in September.

Meanwhile, traders have begun moving out ahead of the two-year project which will see a new roof, larger public areas and improvements to the surrounding infrastructure.

Anchor tenant Harvey Nichols will double the size of its current store – to 45,000 sq ft – under the plans from site owners Brockton Capital and its partner Milligan Retail.

Restaurants and bars will remain open while the building work is carried out, as will the unaffected shops, the BBC and the centre’s car park.

The complex has about 50 independent stores, with fewer than half temporarily relocating.

Brockton Capital bought the shopping and office complex for £127.1m in 2011. It suggests 500 jobs would be created when the building work finishes in 2015.
