Tunnels success prompts car2go to launch corporate membership scheme

THE innovative car2go venture being pioneered in Birmingham city centre is being extended to incorporate a corporate membership scheme for businesses. The move comes after interest from drivers has seen the trial exceed its membership target.
Since setting up in the city just four months ago, car2go has averaged close to 1,000 new members each month and with more and more businesses showing an interest, the firm has decided to capitalise by launching the corporate membership offer.
The six-week long closure of the city centre tunnels this summer is said to have boosted the use of the Smart cars.
Roy Wilcox, sales and marketing director at car2go Birmingham said: “The level of interest in car2go has been incredible and its appeal seems to resonate with everyone from professionals and students, to retirees and visitors – it really is something that Birmingham is embracing.
“Since its launch in May we have also received interest from local businesses wanting to sign up on a corporate basis – effectively enabling them to cut down on transport costs. So, we’re setting up a corporate scheme that will allow businesses of all sizes to register and name specific drivers.”
The corporate account allows businesses to register individual members as named drivers and through the car2go system a breakdown of all charges on the account will be outlined in a monthly invoice.
“The tunnel closures demonstrated how the car2go scheme could enhance the public transport infrastructure. With a number of commuters leaving their cars at home during the tunnel work, car2go was able to provide the flexibility they needed from having their car in the city centre,” added Mr Wilcox.
Business members will have access to car2go’s 250 cars, and if one is not parked nearby then they can reserve a car 30 minutes before it’s needed via their mobile App (Android or iPhone).
