Car dealership Drayton Group breaks ground on new Shrewsbury showroom

ONE of the largest car dealership group’s in the West Midlands has broken ground on a new showroom development in Shropshire.

The new showroom in Shrewsbury is part of a multi-million pound investment in facilities by the Drayton Group.

Group chairman Ken Forbes and Mercedes-Benz UK President and CEO Marcus Breitschwerdt visited the site of the new showroom at the junction of Battlefield Way and Vanguard Way for the ground-breaking ceremony.

Drayton Group has been a franchised dealer partner with Mercedes-Benz UK for more than 40 years, with seven dealerships in the region.  The new Mercedes-Benz of Shrewsbury flagship will replace the current Battlefield Road site, which has been home to the company for 20 years.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony, Mr Forbes said: “Today is a significant moment for Drayton Group, and for our ambitious growth plans.  We’ve been proud to be part of the community in Shrewsbury for 20 years, and our fantastic new facility will ensure we’re here to serve our customers for many more years to come.

“The new Mercedes-Benz of Shrewsbury will welcome its first customer when it opens in June 2014, and today I’m delighted to break ground as construction begins on this exciting project.”

Mr Breitschwerdt added: “Today is a landmark for Mercedes-Benz in the heart of the UK.  The investment in these state of the art premises shows that Ken Forbes and his team at Drayton Group are committing to a long future serving our existing and new customers.  The only way a business can expand is to invest – invest in new premises, invest in its products and services, and invest in a great team.”

Drayton Group is a family owned business with a history of nearly 100 years in the retail motor industry, operating seven Mercedes-Benz outlets in the Midlands: Worcester, Stourbridge, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Stafford, Stoke and Shrewsbury.

The group, which earlier this month entered the Sunday Times Grant Thornton Top Track 250, employs 350 people and has an annual turnover of £200m.
