University of Warwick concludes research agreement with Beijing counterpart

THE University of Warwick has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Science and Technology Beijing to create a long-term collaboration partnership in research and knowledge transfer.

The agreement was signed during a visit to China by Professor Lord Bhattacharyya, Chairman of WMG, which is based at the University of Warwick.

The agreement will see both universities working to develop collaborative research and development opportunities, by working with companies, in China, Europe and internationally, as well as national funding bodies.

The MoU builds on links forged between the two academic bodies following the agreement which saw Professor Sridhar Seetharaman from WMG take up a professorship at USTB with the intention of collaborating on a wide-ranging research and knowledge transfer partnership. There will also be jointly supported doctoral research.

Lord Bhattacharyya said: “I am extremely delighted that we have signed this MoU with this highly regarded research driven university. I look forward to working with USTB on joint collaborative research projects investigating the environmentally effective creation of innovative materials and their applications.”

Professor Zhang Xinxin, USTB President, added: “As a top research-oriented university, USTB is keen on international collaboration. I’m glad to sign the MoU with the University of Warwick and I hope we can soon start cooperation in personnel cultivation and joint research projects in materials science and the related disciplines.”

An academic department within the University of Warwick, WMG was founded to help match academic research with the needs of industry. Its success over the last 30 years is due to the development of cutting edge research and effective knowledge transfer agreements with companies around the world.

USTB was founded in 1952 and is internationally renowned for its strengths in metallurgy and materials science. In 1997 it was in the first group of universities chosen to be part of China’s 211project. Among its faculty are six members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and two members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. It has seven national research bases, including one National Science Centre, two State Key Laboratories, two National Engineering Research Centres and two National Science Basis Platforms.
