University of Wolverhampton establishes new cyber security group

THE first regional branch of a cyber-security professional body has been created at the University of Wolverhampton.

The Institute of Information Security Professionals (IISP) helps advise and advance the cyber security industry, which promotes the protection of all electronic information.

The university has opted to set up a Midlands branch of the IISP to help to raise standards in the region.

The inaugural meeting of the new group was attended by around a dozen members and the branch includes professionals from companies like consultancy giant Capgemini.

The meeting was co-chaired by Tony Proctor, Principal Lecturer from the university’s Faculty of Science and Engineering.

He said: “This is another step forward in relationships with professional organisations and the first for the university in the cyber security sector.

“It reflects our position of engagement within the sector and the development of the subject within the FSE curriculum.

“It is our intention for the Midlands group meet quarterly, to share best practice and form strong relationships with the University and throughout the region.”

He said high-profile incidents of data losses further illustrated the need for greater security.
