Former Midlands newspaper chief takes up new post

THE former chief executive of two of the region’s biggest newspapers has taken up a new post within the local press industry.

Steve Brown sensationally left the Claverley Group , which is the ultimate parent company of the Express and Star, Shropshire Star and a host of weekly newspapers, in March just a few weeks into his tenure with the Wolverhampton-based publisher.

Based in Leeds, he will be the new divisional managing director for the north of newspaper publisher Johnston Press which owns titles such as the Yorkshire Evening Post and Sheffield-based daily The Star as well as various weeklies across the East Midlands.

Mr Brown, who will take up the position on Thursday, has spent his career in the regional newspaper industry and prior to joining the Claverley Group was managing director of Trinity Mirror Midlands, overseeing the Birmingham Post and Mail, Coventry Telegraph and Sunday Mercury among others.

In his new post, he will report directly to Johnston Press chief operating officer Danny Cammiade and his appointment follows the departure of Chris Green last month.

Mr Cammiade said: “We are delighted to welcome Steve to the divisional management team. He has some valuable experience which we know he will apply to his region and will benefit the entire group.”

  • Edinburgh-based Johnston Press has also appointed Henry Faure-Walker as digital and business development director with immediate effect. He joined the company in 2002 as group business development manager and most recently held the role of general manager of the Scotsman Publications in the Scottish capital.
