And regeneration body to be launched to oversee Eastside development

A REGENERATION company is being set up to oversee the redevelopment of Birmingham’s Eastside area – where the city’s HS2 terminus is to be based.

The Birmingham Curzon Urban Regeneration Company, which will be unveiled today, will lead the development of more than 140 hectares of land around Curzon Street, including 600,000 sq m of employment floorspace.

It has been estimated that the development of the area could lead to 14,000 new jobs and could be worth £1.3bn a year to the local economy.

Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin is launching the body that is intended to drive economic growth in the area.

The Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership will pump £130m into improvements in the area and the extension of Midland Metro to Eastside via the money allocated to it in its Growth Deal.

McLoughlin said: “It is great news that Birmingham City Council has created a company specifically to focus on the regeneration opportunities created by HS2. It will bring new investment and work into the city, helping secure the future prosperity of the region and the country.”

HS2 chairman Sir David Higgins said: “The Birmingham Curzon Urban Regeneration Company will be hugely important both for Birmingham and the rest of the West Midlands.”
