Former Birmingham City Council chief executive Stephen Hughes joins law firm

STEPHEN Hughes, formerly Birmingham City Council’s chief executive, has joined law firm Bevan Brittan as a consultant.

He will advise the firm’s public sector clients on non-legal issues surrounding new service delivery models and legislative change.

Bevan Brittan – which has a central Birmingham office – has, according to The Lawyer, advised a string of local authorities on their conversion to alternative business structures (ABS) and will turn to Hughes for client-facing work involving public sector financing and service models.

He will advise clients on topical issues surrounding social care and health integration, new ways of delivering services including new designs, trading models, companies and on the Government’s regional agenda.

Hughes retired from his £180,000 a year job at the council – Britain’s largest local authority – last year.

He was replaced by Mark Rogers – formerly chief executive of neighbouring Solihull Borough Council
