Black Country Chamber pledges support to Birmingham Airport’s growth strategy

THE Black Country Chamber of Commerce has pledged its support to Birmingham Airport in its attempt to increase passenger numbers.

The airport is already a patron member of the chamber as it looks to boost volumes by raising its profile and encouraging more businesses from the sub-region to use the hub.

To reinforce the partnership, chamber chief executive Margaret Corneby visited the airport to hold talks with her counterpart, Paul Kehoe.

The discussions focussed on issues such as the proposed third runway at Heathrow, the arrival of HS2 high speed rail and the implications this would have for the economy of both the Black Country and the wider West Midlands.

“The Black Country Chamber of Commerce fully supports the expansion of Birmingham Airport to better serve the needs of local businesses,” said Ms Corneby.

“We are challenging the findings of the Davies Commission which seems to undo the rebalancing of the economy that HS2 promises. Regional airports offer a significant economic boost to the English regions and Black Country businesses want a local solution to their needs.”

The airport recently recorded the busiest month in its 75 year history, as over one million passengers passed through the terminal during August.

Over the past six months, the airport has achieved consecutive growth and seen records smashed, including for long haul traffic.
