Nasmyth Technologies MD predicts strong growth for new division

A NEWLY-AMALGAMATED subsidiary of Coventry-based aerospace group, Nasmyth, has said it anticipates strong growth over the next 12 months.

Nasmyth Technologies has been created by merging three of the group’s constituent businesses – Chinn Ltd, Chinn Engineering and PWS. The move is in line with efforts by the group to streamline its offer of single source technology solutions to aerospace customers worldwide.

The new division has brought together all the capabilities required to work with a wide range of high performance metals and alloys, producing everything from high to low volume, complex components, precision machined lightweight structures, heavy assembled and welded precision structures for specialist applications.

It has also enabled a series of synergies to be introduced which have made the business more efficient.

The newly-appointed managing director of Nasmyth Technologies is Alistair Schofield, an experienced engineer who has worked in the aerospace, automotive and marine industries. He was previously CEO of luxury yacht manufacturer Fairline Boats and prior to this, spent seven years with Smiths Industries and then 10 years with Doncasters.

His knowledge of both metal and composite precision engineering companies is likely to characterise the development of the business moving forward.

“I was attracted by the opportunity to join Nasmyth largely because of the scope for growth and business development that exists in the group,” he said.

“In the short term I am eager to get the businesses within Nasmyth Technologies thinking and operating as a cohesive division. We are forecasting a significant amount of growth across the division in the next 12 months, so the biggest challenges are likely to be the operational ones associated with ensuring that we manage this growth whilst continuing to provide industry leading quality and service levels.”

He said the business was already updating its growth strategy for the next three-to-five years and one of his key objectives over the next 12 months is to ensure the division has the necessary resources in order to take advantage of growth opportunities.

“The skills and capability of the division mean that there are good opportunities across a variety of market sectors, including aerospace, defence, power generation, nuclear and oil & gas. In addition, I am also eager to look at opportunities to grow the division by acquisition, either in complementary or new technologies,” he said.

He said the value of the merger, from a customer-facing perspective, was that the new operation had been able to pool the skills and experience of three constituent businesses into one division.

“With the three businesses now operating within one division and led by a Nasmyth Technologies management team, there is enormous potential for closer co-operation between the businesses, for example in operational improvement, engineering, purchasing, quality systems and new business development,” he said.

“Overall, the formation of the division is intended to create a market-leading, customer-focused business that is able to take advantage of growth and business improvement opportunities.”
