RESEARCH from Birmingham advisory firm Catalyst Corporate Finance has shown that waste sector firms in the Midlands are now a major contributor to the regional economy.

Midlands businesses account for 20% of The Catalyst Waste Fast 50, produced each year for the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM).

The Waste Fast 50 identifies the fastest growing, privately owned companies in the waste and resource management industry. This year, the top 50 companies represented more than £1.5bn of aggregate revenue and the average growth rate over two years was 18%.

The top ten companies delivered average revenue growth of 38%.

Midlands companies in the list include firms which operate across all areas of the sector, from textiles to hazardous waste. Top of these is Salvation Army Trading coming in at number four with a two year average growth rate of 49.3%.

Reconomy is the next highest Midlands company on the list at number 11.

Other local firms to feature are Environmental Resource Group, Gullivers Truck Hire, Weir Waste, Wastecare Group, Countrywide Waste Management, Castle Environmental, John Pointon and Brown Recycling.

Mark Wilson, Catalyst partner and co-author of the report, said: “Privately-owned waste and resource management businesses are vital to the future of the region.

“The growth rates they have demonstrated over the last two years clearly illustrate the impact they have had on the growth of the Midlands economy.”
