Demons of Tune prepare for their annual fundraiser

DEMONS of Tune, the group formed from the city’s professional services sector, is holding its annual charity fundraiser next week.

It has already sold 450 tickets but has 100 or so left which could mean an additional £1,500 for cancer charities MacMillan and Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

The eagerly anticipated gig at the Jam House in St Paul’s Square, Birmingham, next Wednesday (November 26), will – in many people’s eyes – officially launch the Christmas party season.

Over the last 13 years the band of bankers, solicitors and accountants has raised almost £300,000 for charity. This year is particularly poignant as the group’s singer Leanne passed away from cancer.

As usual with the Demons there is a theme. 1980’s being the choice this year, with plenty of fancy dress on show, not least from the band.

As you would expect they have brought some ’80’s classics into the set, including Bon Jovi, Human League, Culture Club and Guns and Roses.

Ticket can be bought online at http://www.demonsoftune.net/ and cost £15. As the band and venue are provided totally free of charge, all proceeds go to charity.

DWF Birmingham raises more than £6,300 for Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice

LAW firm DWF has raised more than £6,300, through fundraising and monthly collections, for Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice, the firm’s nominated charity.

DWF supports a chosen charity in each of its locations, allowing people across the business to vote for and support a particular organisation within their own community. Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice, which provides care for patients and families living with incurable illness across Birmingham and Sandwell, has been the nominated charity for DWF’s Birmingham office for the past two years.

To raise the money the team held various fundraising activities, including skydives, abseils, art sales, bake-offs, raffles and quizzes. The team also held a monthly clothes and books collection for the Hospice’s charity shops and since 2012 has collected gifts for the Hospice to give to patients at Christmas.

Caroline Coates, executive partner at DWF in Birmingham, said: “It’s been a privilege to have worked with Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice these past two years and offer support in the form of donations and collections.”

DTZ Himalayan Hikers on top of the world

EIGHT members of staff from DTZ are feeling on top of the world after scaling Poon Hill in the Himalayas – the height of 14 Canary Wharfs on top of each other.

The eight have raised a £32,000 for DTZ’s charity partner, Teenage Cancer Trust, and this amount has pushed the company’s overall figure collected to date to more than £100,000.

The trekking team was drawn from all over the UK and included Hannah Jones, associate director from DTZ’s Birmingham office.

All money raised will help Teenage Cancer Trust improve the quality of life and chances of survival for the seven young people aged 13 to 24 who are diagnosed with cancer every day.

Lawyers and students team up to support region’s homeless

MIDLANDS law firm Shakespeares has teamed up with the University of Birmingham Law School’s Centre for Professional Legal Education and Research (CEPLER) to run a project which extends support to people in the region needing pro bono advice.

The project, organised with the support of local charity SIFA Fireside, sees Birmingham law students run a series of clinics at the charity’s offices, providing free legal advice to the charity’s clients under the supervision of a qualified solicitor.

SIFA Fireside is a Birmingham-based charity which helps to tackle homelessness and alcohol abuse. Its main goal is to support vulnerable individuals with all aspects of their social wellbeing.

Michael Young, who supervises students on the project and is a solicitor at Shakespeares, said:  “The success of the project demonstrates the need for this type of free and practical advice for vulnerable individuals in the region.

“We hope to continue to increase awareness of the initiative and build our relationship with the university and provide helpful legal advice to the community on a regular basis.”
