Carillion secures £75m contract to deliver new Anfield stand

INFRASTRUCTURE and support services group Carillion has secured the £75m contract for the redevelopment of Liverpool Football Club’s main stand at its famous Anfield ground.

The award comes after the Wolverhampton-based group was announced back in July as the preferred bidder for the contract.

Work on the project, which will add around 8,500 seats to the main stand and increase the overall capacity of Anfield to around 54,000, is expected to start this week and is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2016.

Carillion plans to carry out the work in a way that will mitigate its impact and keep as much of the existing main stand as possible in operational use throughout the contract.

The firm’s chief executive Richard Howson said in July: “I believe that being selected for this prestigious project reflects Carillion’s reputation for high standards of quality, health and safety and sustainability.

“We look forward to working closely with Liverpool Football Club to create new world-class facilities at its famous Anfield Stadium.”

The contract is a further boost to the Wolverhampton company, which last week secured support services contracts from the operator of Heathrow Airport and Barts Health NHS Trust worth a combined £80m.

Earlier this month, Carillion also announced it had agreed to acquire a 60% interest in the trade and assets of Canada’s Rokstad Power Corporation in a deal worth up to £33m.

And it has agreed to buy the remaining 40% after five years for a maximum fee of £42m.
