New president for Birmingham Law Society
MUSHTAQ Khan, a partner at legal firm Freeths, has been appointed the 120th president of Birmingham Law Society.
He takes over the role from Eileen Schofield, who stepped down at the Society’s annual general meeting on Tuesday.
At Freeths, Khan heads the social housing division, advising housing associations and local authorities on housing and asset management issues, dispute resolution, regulation and governance. He is a member of the Social Housing Law Association.
During his year in office, Khan has undertaken to promote Birmingham and the West Midlands as a centre for legal excellence and to help raise the profile of the economic and social value provided by the legal professional.
He said: “I am honoured to be appointed president of Birmingham Law Society. I have long been a passionate advocate of Birmingham and the wider region.
“The legal services sector, as part of the business, professional and financial services industry, has an important part to play in the economic and social well-being of this region.”
Taking over the role of vice president is John Hughes of Shakespeares, while Andrew Beedham of Clarke Willmott becomes deputy vice president. Professor Bernadette Griffin of The University of Law and Ann Houghton of Anthony Collins Solicitors remain as joint honorary secretaries.
