University of Birmingham goes Green for new HTRC director

THE University of Birmingham’s High Temperature Research Centre has announced that Professor Nick Green has taken up his new position as director.

Green joins from manufacturer Doncasters, where he held the position of Head of Technical Centre.  At Doncasters he established and led the centre, bringing to bear a focus of material characterisation and material/process modelling for development of high value manufacturing processes.

Prior to this, Green held the EPSRC Star Chair in Casting Technology at The University of Birmingham and was co-director of the Casting Partnership with Rolls-Royce.  He has extensive experience in manufacturing acquired during appointments as technical director of Cosworth Technology and group competence leader for Process Development across VAW’s foundries.

Commenting on his appointment, he said: “The HTRC provides a unique opportunity for collaboration between researchers, designers and manufacturers to accelerate and de-risk development and deployment of novel and advanced manufacturing technologies for high temperature materials.  The centre will enable realisation of synergies across complimentary sectors and the wide-ranging strengths of the College of Engineering and Physical Science are ideally placed to underpin this with world-class research.

The centre, dual located at Ansty Park and at the University of Birmingham’s Edgbaston campus, will enable research and experimentation spanning low and medium Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs), to deliver rapid high quality product and process innovations.  It will be a unique casting, design, simulation and advanced manufacturing research facility.

The 5,800m² Ansty Park development is funded through a £40m investment by Rolls-Royce, matched by a £20m government grant through the Higher Education Funding Council for England’s (HEFCE) UK Research Partnership Investment Fund (UKRPIF) and is due to open later this year.
