Birmingham Airport warns of further disruption to Brussels

TRAVEL arrangements for people heading to Belgian capital Brussels remain severely disrupted today in the wake of yesterday’s terrorist attacks on the city’s airport and metro station.

All flights to and from the airport from Birmingham remain cancelled and people trying to make alternative arrangements are facing the prospect of very difficult journeys.

Several airlines are offering flights to other airports in Belgium but the travel arrangements once on the ground remain fractious.

A statement on the Birmingham Airport website said: “The safety of our customers and staff is of paramount importance to Birmingham Airport and our thoughts are with those in Brussels.

“Flights between Birmingham and Brussels Airport have been affected and we advise passengers due to travel to Brussels to contact their airline.”

Further information for passengers has been provided by Brussels Airlines website

A statement on that website says: “Due to the attacks at Brussels Airport the airport is closed until further notice. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Brussels Airlines go out to everyone affected by these terrible attacks. Brussels Airlines priority now is to do everything to assist and support its colleagues and passengers.

“As a consequence of these events, Brussels Airlines has cancelled all flights to and from Brussels Airport today, Wednesday, March 23.

“Brussels Airlines is doing its utmost to get as quickly as possible back to normal operations in order to bring its guests to their final destination.

“However, due to difficult operational circumstances, delays and/or cancellations during the following days cannot be excluded. We therefore recommend all passengers who don’t have an urgent need to travel in the coming two days to review their travel plans if ever possible. Further updates will be communicated as soon as they are available via this website.”

A media event heralding the arrival of the new Airbus A380 service by Emirates at Birmingham will still go ahead today, despite what happened yesterday.

Airport CEO Paul Kehoe had been due to brief the press yesterday about the publicity event but the briefings were cancelled following the attacks.
